Challenges in the Organic Corn Tortilla Industry

Challenges in the Organic Corn Tortilla Industry
We struck gold when we found local organic dent corn just 15 miles away from our factory.

At Vermont Tortilla Company we're stoked about organic corn tortillas! They're super tasty and good for you. But let's be real, there are a few hurdles to jump through to get them on everyone's plates.

To get started let's first talk about the elephant in the room: price. Organic tortillas can be more expensive than regular ones. That's because of the higher production costs and the demand for organic products. It can be a tough sell, but we think people are starting to realize that it's worth it to invest in their health. A ton of conventional corn costs around $200 whereas a ton of organic corn is about $800. There is also an economy of scale, artisanal products are more labor intensive since many of the production steps are manual. Finally, we take good care of our employees paying them a livable wage because it's the right thing to do.

And let's not forget about shelf life. Corn tortillas are kinda like bread – they get stale pretty quickly. That's why it's important to find packaging that keeps them fresh for as long as possible and either keep them in the refrigerator or freeze them.

To find organic corn can also be a bit of a challenge. It's not as widely available as regular corn, and it can be more expensive to grow. Plus, organic farming practices can be more labor-intensive, which drives up production costs. And then there's the whole transportation thing. Making sure the corn stays organic all the way from the farm to your plate can add to the cost.

Another thing is that many people don't know about the benefits of organic corn tortillas. They might think they're just like regular tortillas, but they're not! Organic tortillas are made with non-GMO corn and don't have as many pesticides or artificial additives. Plus, they taste great!

So, what can we do to make organic corn tortillas more accessible? Well, for starters, we need to educate people about the benefits. Let's spread the word about how they taste great and are better for you. We can also work on finding ways to make them more affordable, maybe developing further partnerships with local farmers or exploring new production methods.

We're really excited about the future of organic corn tortillas. With a little effort, we can make them a staple in every kitchen.
